           Excluding non-melanoma skin cancer, at least 42% of newly diagnosed cancers in the United States could be avoided. These include cancers related to tobacco use and other unhealthy lifestyle choices.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Although certain inherited genetic traits cannot be modified, here are eight things you can start doing today to reduce your risk of getting cancer.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           1. Avoid tobacco
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Tobacco use can increase your risk of lung, mouth, throat and kidney cancer. Tobacco can also lead to esophageal and colorectal cancer. Secondhand smoke that is inhaled from other people’s cigarettes, pipes or cigars can also increase your risk of cancer. If you do not currently use tobacco, do not start. If you use tobacco, now is a good time to stop. When possible, avoid situations where you are around people smoking tobacco products.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           2. Maintain a healthy weight
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Excessive weight increases the risk of certain types of cancer, such as colorectal, kidney, esophageal, pancreatic and postmenopausal breast cancer. In addition, being overweight can lead to other health complications such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. There are many factors that determine a healthy weight range such as age, height, body type, wellness goals and body fat distribution. Consult a healthcare professional to determine your ideal weight range.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           3. Exercise
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Regular exercise can help reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer. Adults should include some kind of movement daily and target at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. Before beginning any exercise routine discuss your plans with a healthcare professional.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           4. Eat a healthy diet
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Many highly-processed and high-calorie fast foods include large amounts of sodium, fat and sugars. These foods, as well as sugary drinks, should be avoided as they can increase your weight and cause obesity. Instead, eat a well-balanced diet rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits and beans.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           While you can enjoy red meat, lamb, pork, and processed meats, these foods should be a small portion of your overall diet. Instead, eat healthy proteins from plant-based sources like broccoli, lentils, nuts and seeds. Other healthy proteins include fish, and low-fat dairy.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           5. Protect yourself from the sun
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Skin cancer is the most common kind of cancer in the United States. One of the leading risk factors that lead to skin cancer is ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and tanning beds. You can reduce your risk of skin cancer by: 
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
            Using “broad spectrum” sunscreen when you are outdoors.
           
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
            Limiting exposure to direct sunlight, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.
           
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
            Staying under the shade of a tree or broad-brimmed hat when outdoors.
           
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
            Protecting your skin with UPF rated clothing that helps shield your body from UV rays.

    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
            Avoiding tanning beds.

           6. Limit alcohol consumption
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Excessive alcohol consumption can increase your risk of cancer in the colon, liver, mouth, throat, larynx and esophagus. Women who consume excessive alcohol increase their risk of breast cancer, too.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           The best approach is to abstain from alcohol completely. If you drink alcohol, limit consumption to no more than one drink per day for women or two drinks per day for men. A standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of 5% beer; 8 ounces of 7% malt liquor; 5 ounces of 12% wine; or 1.5 ounces of 40% distilled spirits.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           7. Get vaccinated
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Certain viruses and infections may increase the risk of cancer. The Hepatitis B virus can increase the risk for liver cancer. Human papillomavirus (HPV) increases the risk for cervix, vagina and vulva cancer in women, and penis cancer in men. It can also cause anus and throat cancer in both men and women. Fortunately, vaccinations exist for both Hepatitis B and HPV. Consult a healthcare professional to see if you qualify for these vaccines and to learn about other cancer risks associated with viruses and bacteria.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           8. Go for regular cancer screenings
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Early detection of cancer can increase the likelihood of successful treatment. This is especially true with breast, cervical, colorectal and lung cancer. Screening tests are also available for ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, testicular, thyroid, bladder, oral and skin cancers. If you have a family history of any type of cancer, talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits of these various screening examinations.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Although there is no guarantee you can avoid a cancer diagnosis, these simple lifestyle changes can help reduce the risk.

           Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), as its name implies, is the buildup of fat in the liver not caused by heavy alcohol use. In the United States, NAFLD is one of the most common causes of liver disease. It is estimated that about 24% of U.S. adults have NAFLD.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           People with NAFLD may not have any symptoms, although some people have reported feeling tired or having upper right side abdominal pain.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           It is unclear as to what causes NAFLD. However, there are certain risk factors which make individuals more likely to develop this disease. These risk factors include:
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
            Overweight or obesity
           
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
            Prediabetes or diabetes
           
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
            High cholesterol and/or high triglycerides
           
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
                        
            Metabolic syndrome or one or more traits of metabolic syndrome, which includes large waist size; high levels of triglycerides; low levels of HDL; high blood pressure; high blood glucose levels or type 2 diabetes
           
                      &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           NAFLD can be diagnosed during a routine physical checkup that includes a blood test. This quick guide can help you understand non-alcoholic fatty liver disease – including how it is diagnosed and treated.

Untreated, strep throat may go away on its own but you also risk complications such as sinus or ear infections, kidney inflammation or rheumatic fever. That is why it is important to see your doctor and get the appropriate treatment.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           The bacteria can also live for brief periods on doorknobs, tableware, and other items that people often share. Direct contact with the bacteria can be transferred from your hands to your nose, mouth or eyes.

           In addition to a sore throat, you may develop a sudden, high fever with chills. Other symptoms may include swollen lymph nodes, tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth, difficulty swallowing, headache, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pains.

A throat culture takes more time, but can detect infections that the rapid test might not find.

           1. Shingles gets its start as chickenpox

           Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you recover from chickenpox the virus remains dormant in your body.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           As you get older, the varicella-zoster virus may reactivate. When it does, it returns as shingles. Unlike chickenpox, which is contagious, you can't spread shingles to others. However, you can transmit the underlying virus and cause a person who hasn’t had chickenpox, or vaccinated against it, to get chickenpox.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           2. Shingles can create serious symptoms and complications

           The rash typically appears on just one side of the body. However, shingles can also appear on your back, chest, face, buttocks, around one eye or ear, or even in your mouth.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Shingles near the eye or ear can pose a different set of concerns. A case of shingles that involves the eye can cause blurred vision along with eye pain, redness, swelling and possible corneal damage. Shingles in the ear can produce complications like dizziness, hearing loss and earaches in the affected ear.

If you will become one of the millions of American women who get this type of screening, take a look at the do's and don'ts of getting your first mammogram.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Why do you need a mammogram? If you can't answer this question or aren't sure why you need this type of test - start with your doctor. The physician can explain what a mammogram is and why they feel you need one this year. 
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Mammograms are x-ray pictures of your breasts. These x-rays provide your doctor with a look inside of your body minus the need for an invasive or surgical test. Two types of mammograms available are: screening and diagnostic. 
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           A 
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           screening mammogram
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
            is an annual preventative imaging test for women with no symptoms or breast issues. Like the name implies, a screening mammogram screens for breast cancer and/or other abnormalities. 
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), women ages 40 through 44 have the option to 
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           start
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
            their annual screening mammograms, depending on risk factors and family history. Between the ages of 45 and 54, the ACS recommends annual screenings. Women ages 55 and over may switch to a two-year schedule.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           If you have risk factors (such as a family history of breast cancer), a previous cancer, or some other types of breast issues, the doctor may recommend that you begin this type of screening before age 40 or have mammograms more often than every year.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Unlike screening mammograms, 
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           diagnostic mammograms

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
            aren't only for early detection purposes. The doctor may order this type of test if you have a sudden or suspicious change in your breasts, a lump, pain, nipple discharge, or any other breast-related concern. This mammogram may include additional images that help the doctor to learn more about a potential problem or rule out cancer.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Don't Disregard Pre-Test Directions
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           The doctor may provide you with pre-mammography directions. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the need for a repeat test or a mammogram that is difficult to read. Even though you may feel sweaty on your mammogram day, it is highly recommended that you skip using deodorants, antiperspirants, or lotions. These types of products can create white spots on the mammogram.

           When should you schedule your first mammogram? Your age and the ACS recommendations (along with risk factors) can help you to answer this question with a year or age. But you also need to know more about scheduling the specific date of your test.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           While a mammogram won't cause severe pain, it can feel uncomfortable. If you typically experience breast sensitivity before your period, schedule your mammogram during a different week. This can make the test easier to manage and help you to avoid unnecessary discomfort.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Don't Assume the Worst If You're Called Back

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           The ACS notes that it is common to come back for additional tests or to retake images — especially after a first mammogram. Why would your doctor call you back and what exactly does this mean?
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
                      
           Screening mammograms are a first-line way to detect early breast cancer. But these tests aren't perfect. A blurry picture or dense breast tissue can interfere with the radiologist's ability to read the image. If the doctor can't clearly see your breast or needs a more detailed picture of a specific area, they may call you back for a diagnostic mammogram or to re-take some of the pictures.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Even though the need for additional tests may make you anxious, according to the ACS, less than one in 10 women who get callbacks have cancer. Other issues that may require a callback include calcifications or cysts that look suspicious. If you don't have a previous mammogram to use as a comparison, the doctor may need more information to rule out potential issues or make a diagnosis.

           A UTI is a bacterial infection of the urinary tract. The urinary tract consists of the urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Usually, the bacteria enter the tract through the urethra and infect the bladder. Severe infections can move up the ureters to the kidneys.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Urine itself is very sterile and passes through the system without problem. The bacteria involved is most commonly E.coli from outside of the body, usually from fecal matter.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Who Gets UTIs?
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Women are at the highest risk for UTIs. They have a shorter urethra, and their openings are closer to the anus than in men. Women are more likely to get UTIs after menopause. Hormonal changes cause a change in estrogen that affects the urinary tract. Women who are sexually active or have a new partner are also at higher risk of a UTI.
          
                    &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

You may be able to reduce your cholesterol naturally by changing your eating habits: reducing red meat, fats, carbohydrates, sugars; and adding healthy greens, complex carbohydrates, and lean proteins like fish. Even with changes in diet, however, medication is often needed.
